Gabriel is a bright, personable 10-year old boy with Stage IV Medulloblastoma (brain tumor). These types of tumors are invasive and rapidly growing tumors that, unlike most brain tumors, spread through the cerebrospinal fluid and frequently metastasize to different locations in the brain and spine. When he was diagnosed, the cancer had already spread to his spine Last August, Gabriel underwent surgery to remove as much of the brain tumor as possible followed by 6 weeks of chemo and radiation. Once Gabriel had recovered enough he had to have a second major surgery to implant a permanent shunt in his brain to redistribute his excess spinal fluid into his abdomen.
Today Gabriel struggles with hearing loss, peripheral neuropathy, loss of balance and coordination. He hopes to return to school in the fall.
